Greece Memory Top1 – Hiking Survival – Action Code 20181208希腊记忆之最1-徒步历险记-行动代码20181208

My memory about the adventurous experience on the day 08.12.2018 in the Kerkis (Greek Κέρκης) Mountain of Samos.

During the weekend of the first week of my stay on Samos, I joined a hiking group organized by an Italian girl. Before the hiking, I was told that the hiking would take 6 hours and requires no further technics such as rock climbing and an able-bodied person could finish the hiking without being over-challenged. Looking at the friendly smiling face, I handed myself to the group without hesitation.

The hiking group was composed of an English boy "D"(Yes, the nation that started Brexit), a Scottish boy "S"(Yes, the nation where men wear skirt), an Australian girl "M"(the nation full of Kangaroo), a Chinese married engineer who works in Germany "Q"(That's Me) and of course the team spirit - an Italian girl "Ace".

Ace.

The adventure started with two hours of thrilling driving on the mountainous road. The small Honda choked multiple times on upslope and the car was once stuck in a pit. As an experienced driver, I suggested "Ace" to drive the car and the rest of hiking group to push the car from the back, then we moved the car out of the trap. I still could remember the facial expression of "D", when he learned that he had to get out to push the car. Life is not gentle towards this young man who had only 3 hours of sleep due to a late party. With so many unexpected events underway, we were a bit behind our schedule when we arrived at the suggested starting point.

After we parked the car, we were finally on the road! In the picture below I was still able to smile, unware of what was waiting for me.

The “appetizer” of the day is a walk on the "evil passage" “Kakoperato”(Greek Κακοπέρατου) to the Monastery of Zoodochos pigi (Greek Ζωοδόχου πηγής, English Life giving spring). The Monastery is built by some ascetics in this regions. After I managed to go through the rocky passage of Kakoperato, the name "evil passage" was self-explainary to me.

After the evil passage, we had to find a path with red markers decribed in a hiking guide. We thought that we found the right path but it was not. The shining sun empowered us to walk on an unusual path, covered with only huge stones and fallen burned giant trees.

During the hiking, I employed all four of my limbs but was still too slow for the hiking group. The needles of grass stabbed into my skin, and what's more my legs sometimes hit with some stones and dead branches of trees. Eventually I sweated through and totally exhausted after two hours of “climbing”. I suggested the rest of the group to the summit so that I could rest at a platform. The waiting lasted for more than two hours and once I was caught into the dreadful imagination that the team won't be back anymore. I checked my storage, where one package of nuts and one third of water left. What terrifying was, the battery of my phone is less than 20%. Since I was in the middle of nowhere, where even birds were rare to see, I dialed my first phone call asking for help, whereas the signal was broken after 10 seconds of connection. Luckily, I heard the voices of the group after 15 minutes, which was the most horrifying 15 minutes in my whole life.

At last, a drop-by trip to the Cave of Pythagoras is served as the dessert. The way to the cave has steep stairs, so it is not as dangerous as the hiking before; however, my legs were trembling when I was looking downwards.

My Way

On 15thof December 2018, when I was walking along the port of Pythagoreio with a Taiwan girl. I saw a boat with “MY WAY” written on the stem and the song “My Way” echoed in my mind.

The boat “My Way” at port of Pythagoreio, Samos

“And now, the end is near
And so I face the final curtain
My friend, I’ll say it clear
I’ll state mycase, of which I’m certain
I’ve lived a life that’s full
I traveled each and every highway
And more, much more than this, I did it my way
Regrets, I’ve had a few
But then again, too few to mention
I did what I had to do and saw it through without exemption
I planned each charted course, each careful step along the byway
And more, much more than this, I did it my way
Yes, there were times, I’m sure you knew
When I bit off more than I could chew
But through it all, when there was doubt
I ate it up and spit it out
I faced it all and I stood tall and did it my way
I’ve laughed and cried
I’ve had my fill,my share of losing
And now, as tears subside, I find it all so amusing
To think I did all that
And may I say, not in a shy way
Oh, no, oh, no,not me, I did it my way
For what is a man, what has he got?
If not himself, then he has naught
To say the things he truly feels and not the words of one who kneels
The record shows I took the blows and did it my way
Yes, it was myway”

For me, nothing could express the word “individualism” better than this song. I love this song, from the moment I heard it at the age of 20 from a Japanese movie “swallowtail”directed Iwai Shunji(严井 俊二). I identified that I would take a totally different path than the one my parents have taken. However, I went out from a small town in China where the traditional collectivism prevail. People usually could not appreciate that a single child from the family left home and traveled so far away to Europe to get education and work. As the master said: “When your parents are alive, do not travel far”. Disregarded all the traditional dogma and voices of objections, I went to Europe to explore the world as much as I could.

I am often asked that if I regret to come to Europe. I find the question amusing. The truth is, no matter what one has chosen, one will regret. In microeconomic theory, there is one word “opportunity cost” that defines the benefits one misses out when choosing one alternative over another. I gave up the comfort of staying at home and chose to see the exciting world outside. Those people, who don‘t step out their small worlds, could enjoy the cozy and warm home.
